Yesterday was one of those days, the kind I could call “bad” but really wasn’t bad. It was merely challenging. It walked up, shook my hand, and said, “You’re going to need to work at me, but when your head hits the pillow tonight and the cat curls up on your lungs, it’ll all be worth it.” It did not, however, indicate to me that rolling out of bed this morning at 6 would be worth it. I could be a morning person if mornings didn’t come so early. As it turns out, managing people is both ridiculously easy and stupefyingly hard. No surprise there: everything’s both, sometimes simultaneously. I like that. Am I a Taoist? I especially liked the part of yesterday that involved the aggressively crazy guy perched...

This may only be relevant to Inkbot, but those of you with smaller ears might also be interested. It is no secret that I absolutely loathe the standard iPod earbuds. Last year I tried the Griffin EarJams, but they just made the unforgiving pieces of plastic larger and unwieldy, so that they were uncomfortable and fell out of my ears constantly. I had some cheapo collapsible Sony headphones for a while, but they died, so I was back to the iPod earbuds and willing to stick it out because I’m really tired of buying substandard crap that doesn’t add value to my life. Until this morning, when my ears started to bleed. Thankfully, the eardrums weren’t bleeding, just the skin, but still — if you have never experienced impromptu ear bleeding,...

foot and concrete Originally uploaded by cygnoir. Bright Eyes’ song “First Day of My Life” makes me so happy whenever I hear it, especially the line “I’d rather be working for a paycheck than waiting to win the lottery.” Interpol’s “Slow Hands” always puts me in a James Dean mood, you know the kind: I’m a loner, Dottie. A rebel. The Bootcuts’ “Six Bux Waltz” inspires crazy hopping and arm-flapping. I long for a top hat and cane when I hear Pink Martini’s “Hang On, Little Tomato”. Frank Zappa, Led Zeppelin, Pat Metheny, Black Flag, Wally Pleasant, and Pixies remind me of college; nine inch nails and New Order remind me of high school; Violent Femmes and the B-52s...

My handy little folding headphones are D-E-D dead. Yesterday I spent the ferry ride (longer than usual, because one of the catamarans is in dry-dock this week) twisting and turning and creasing and bending the right-side wire. As it turns out, the “Democracy Now!” podcast only in my left ear just makes me sleepy. But I don’t want to buy new headphones. I don’t want to buy new anything anymore. Ever. (This week.) Recently I was a bit mopey about not having a commute carry-all with lots of pockets for various things I need on the commute that don’t go in my exactly-right-sized purse, so I refurbished an old thing I had. The thing is difficult to describe, but it was given to me ten years ago and I think it was originally designed...

i want to feel good

I remembered to catch the 1 California, though it does not run east on California. I counted out a dollar and a quarter, two dimes and a nickel, and I walked a few blocks down the hill until I met the bus hiss-popping to a stop at the light. The bus, even accordioned, was full. As I gave over my money and rose to the driver’s level, he smiled and said, “Hold on.” I gripped the yellow metal bars and turned to face the windshield. The street, the oncoming traffic, the tiny people with their huge plastic bags, everything was so fast and bright and close. The massive windshield shielded me from only wind as I listened to the audiobook narrator intone, “Repeat these five words to yourself: ‘I want to feel good.’” I want to...
