library den mother
I just told a library patron what I thought. Specifically, I just told a library patron what I thought of her breaking my rule — that these computers are turned off fifteen minutes before the library closes — time and time again. I also told her that she was taking advantage of us, abusing the free Internet access and free printing and free someplace to stay all day long, every day.
I told her that because she broke the rule, and had been warned previously, I was calling Campus Security. And then I called Campus Security.
She left before the security guard showed up. The other two patrons who test my patience by attempting to break rules also left before he showed up, but not before I had to remind each of them again of these rules. None of these patrons is a student at our private university … or anywhere, to my knowledge.
I am now officially tired of being the Library Den Mother. When my supervisor returns from vacation, she will note a few modifications to the new access policy I just proposed.

We were having major issues with this for a while… students were often not able to use comptuters because we had so many random people just sitting at them all day long. Eventually we had our library systems office change the security on the computers so that you were required to have a Yale NetID to log in to use the computers. Out of the ~30 computers in the library, 6 have been left public. It’s helped relieve the problem a LOT.

I soooooooo get this post. I usually don’t have a problem because I’m a big guy.
However alot of the students who close get alot of attitude from scumbag students who want to passive agressively keep the library open later.
One student worker couldn’t close the library for an hour because a cadre of students were being bastards, turning the computers and copiers back on,and complaning (To a fellow student??) that the library needed to be open later.
I had to have a sit down with security and the managers of the library, and have a little talk.
I usually walk up with my finger near the power button and say “save it or lose it” that get’s the message across real quick.
