i am my friends

i am my friends Originally uploaded by cygnoir. The old Elph was getting a bit dusty. I thought I’d let it out for a little exercise. I removed myself from the Den Mother situation entirely after the last incident. Now I just call Campus Security when we flash the lights 20 minutes to closing. Let them handle it. Last Thursday’s SFlickr gathering, focused around sending Sam and Sam off on their gap-year trip in fabulous style, was outstanding. I usually have an awesome time at these things, but this one was particularly fun. Quite a few oldbies and newbies showed up, and I had the unexpected pleasure of making a new friend. Yes, Universe, I hear you already. I’m not meant to be a hermit who lives in a shack out in the countryside in...

library den mother

I just told a library patron what I thought. Specifically, I just told a library patron what I thought of her breaking my rule — that these computers are turned off fifteen minutes before the library closes — time and time again. I also told her that she was taking advantage of us, abusing the free Internet access and free printing and free someplace to stay all day long, every day. I told her that because she broke the rule, and had been warned previously, I was calling Campus Security. And then I called Campus Security. She left before the security guard showed up. The other two patrons who test my patience by attempting to break rules also left before he showed up, but not before I had to remind each of them again of these rules. None of these...

wikipedia birthday meme

Mooooom, Kyle keeps meme-tagging me.  Make him stop! Go to Wikipedia. In the Search box, type your birth month and day (but not year). List three events that happened on your birthday. List two important birthdays and one interesting death. Post it. My birthday is 23 February. Three events: 1455 – Traditional date for the publication of the Gutenberg Bible, the first Western book printed from movable type. 1919 – Benito Mussolini forms the Fascist Party in Italy. 1995 – The Dow Jones Industrial Average gains 30.28 to close at 4,003.33, closing above 4,000 for the first time. Two important births: 1633 – Samuel Pepys, English naval administrator and man of letters, posthumously famous as a diarist (d. 1703) 1868 – W.E.B. DuBois,...

breakup poem

I thought I posted this here, but I guess not! Here we go, a first draft from a new poem, written a week and a half ago for a friend. you say it was a bitter breakup i say it was supposed to taste good? i didn’t know. the things we say when we don’t want to say anything at all. the first day out. the first day outside once you are different, i say, that tastes good. sunshine tastes like vanilla and coffee tastes like freedom and everywhere dogs are especially waggy to you well maybe it didn’t go down that way maybe it was a piece of shit day a crappy rainy day and though it wasn’t cold, everything stuck to your arms like sweat we’re clever and hindered brought together by absence and afterthought i’m going to share something...

rebirth

Hi, everyone. I know this is a drastic change. Please bear with me as certain things are bound to be broken for a little while. Feel free to note their brokenness in comments to this post. I tried to make the permalinks include “quill” to make the transition a little more seamless, but that didn’t work. However, all of the archives are here. I’m working on making their existence in the sidebar a little less painful. No OpenID or TypeKey authentication required in favor of built-in spam filtering: let’s see how that goes. Goodbye, Movable Type. I still like you a lot, but WordPress makes my life so much easier.

bone of collars

After a very relaxing weekend, I am feeling much better. The gas smell in my office increased drastically last week, and on Wednesday afternoon I got a splitting non-migraine headache and nausea. Just before midnight Thursday morning, and through Saturday afternoon, I had all manner of gastrointestinal and cranial distress, including but not limited to stomach (esophageal?) cramping to the point of preventing me from sleep. The “lie on your left side” trick I learned from tyee worked only part of the time, leaving me beyond uncomfortable from the sternum down. The headache left me beyond uncomfortable from the neck up. Really, for the past four days, the only part of me that has felt 100% has been my collarbone. Anyway, the gas smell is being...

tappity

I thought I was so clever. I did the research. I planned and plotted. I waited, too, to be sure. And then I sprang, I pounced, I purchased. I bought a new keyboard for my Mac, just as the old one gasped its final letter. And I didn’t buy just any keyboard. I bought the keyboard. It is ergonomic and has buttons that do things like mute my music or bring my mail client to the foreground. Really neat, important things. And it is white, which I wasn’t really digging before I saw it but has grown on me. The problem is that it sucks. It sucks in a very subtle way, but this way makes me not want to use it. The keys are half-click, half-smush. They start out with what you think might be a satisfying THARK noise and end with a SPLUSH. Sometimes they...

mouse

One of your boyfriend’s mousetraps fires in the middle of the night. You know this sound without having to think about it, because it is one of those sounds that can be nothing else. After feeling a little sad about the mouse, you go back to sleep. You dream about ghost-mice, and if they attract ghost-cats. Right when you wake up, you go looking for which mousetrap it was, and when you find it, you look down at your right hand to realize you have the camera in your phone already fired up. Like you were ever going to upload that to Flickr. What is going on here? What am I documenting? Is it life, mine or a mouse’s? Or is it something else?
