don’t judge

When I first took the Myers-Briggs test over a decade ago, I was right on the line between ENFP and the introverted counterpart, INFP. Not one for ambivalence, I took it again, with a result of INFP. I thought it was pretty fascinating for about a week, then promptly forgot about it. Then last week, I was required to retake the test in preparation for a workshop I enrolled in that is supposed to give me insights into other people and help me learn to interact more effectively with them. So I did, this time with a Scantron sheet, so it wasn’t self-scored. The result was INFJ. And not just a little on the Judging side, versus Perceiving; it’s my clearest dichotomy. Reading the materials supplied by the workshop coordinators, I’m surprised that...

podcast #5: swangate

For this episode of “… and scene”, Matt interviewed me! And I didn’t explode! To be honest, it was rather fun, answering his questions on ghosts and heroes and religion and Screech. Do you sense a Screech theme? Sadly, so do I. Edited to add: fivecats had a great suggestion. Send in your questions for us to answer in upcoming podcasts! If you have any questions you want me to ask Matt when I interview him next time, please send them soon. Download Episode #5 | Subscribe with...

Well, okay, not this kind of bug. And not a computer bug, either. A sicky bug. So no updates until I get over this. I can’t have a repeat of last time. Be...

measurement

I’ve stopped counting the weeks at work, which can only mean that I am no longer a total n00b. Actually, it also means that I lost count and am too lazy to figure it out. A charming and funny coworker saved my sanity during the all-day quarterly offsite meeting today. Despite dealing with an illness and the effects of antibiotics on my already-compromised system, I managed through the entire eight hours (with minimal breaks and a 20-minute lunch, which I find barbaric). I’m not sure if it’s wiser to knock these types of meetings out all in one go like that, or to break them apart into half-days. Have there been any studies on the efficacy of all-day meetings? Surely people tune out parts of the day as energy levels wane. Regardless,...

today’s news

Me: Sometimes I just feel like yesterday’s news.     (pause) The MSG: But you’re today’s news!     (pause) Both crack up. I don’t know why I pull moods like that, but I’m glad I’m with someone who can help me pull right back out of them. In two weeks, we’ll heading up the coast for a mini-vacation to celebrate our third anniversary. Three years! I would say something like “I can’t remember my life without him” but that would be untrue and extremely creepy. We had an exciting weekend, which is always the case when someone asks me around lunchtime on Friday, “Got anything exciting planned for the weekend?” and I respond, “Blissfully, no.”...

frazzle me friday: a day in the life

This week’s Frazzle Me Friday topic comes from Gina: “Tell us about a day in the life of Halsted.” I picked a weekday because my weekends are too varied to sum up in one of these posts. At 07:00, my BlackBerry’s alarm goes off. If I don’t hit the snooze button, then I have time to check my work email and personal email and read some feeds before hopping in the shower. Zen is on a new diet, so she is ready to be fed before any of that happens. I try to get out the door by 08:00. When my sleep schedule suffers, this is significantly later, which makes me all wonky because I hate being late. I listen to my iPod (usually podcasts) as I walk to the subway and then ride in to work. When I arrive at work, I check Outlook first thing...

cleaning house

Bazowie, this week’s Frazzle Me Friday is gonna be good! Thanks for your suggestions. I finally tackled something I had been avoiding for months: my filing cabinet. Two of its three drawers — office supplies, pens and stationery — are completely cleaned out and organized. I’m still in a bit of shock that this is Done. It’s good shock, though. The kind without internal trauma. Next up: filing. Blark. I changed the theme of cygnoir.net. Back to black on white. Words over fancy. Always. Maybe that’s a response to meeting some excellent new people lately, people who can see past the whateverness and get to the soft chewy center of meaning. People who don’t mind that it’s a 90% chance of Frank Sinatra in here,...

new feature: frazzle me friday

I was recently a guest of “3 Fast, 3 Furious” for a podcast on cheating, treachery and deceit. The podcast hosts (podhosts?) were talking a bit about their message board, and it made me miss some of the interaction on my site in the olden days. You know the olden days. Like, 2002. Anyway, in order to kickstart the crazy, I am implementing a new feature here at cygnoir.net. Frazzle Me Friday! It’s kind of like Tickle Me Elmo, only NO TICKLING. All day Fridays, I will be taking your requests for my next entry here. You may ask me to photograph something I see everyday, or review one of those super-awesome Web 2.0 services you hear the kids talking so much about, or recite a poem, or write something about my first pet fish, Fred. Anything you...

puzzle pirates

I have nothing to write about because I am too busy playing a puzzle-solving pirate. Puzzle Pirates is the cutest MMORPG EVAR. I am particularly hooked on the swordfighting, especially because different weapons result in different puzzle outcomes. I love well-crafted games. Join me, ye landlubbers! (I’m Carinah on the Sage Ocean.)
