He threw it away. How was he supposed to know that his father would want to keep that old phone book? But I look up my friends that way, his father said. Dad, that was 36 years ago. I don’t care. So he drives down to the library and makes photocopies of the old phone book. His father will be grateful, but it is like reading torn pages from someone else’s Bible.

Sparkly Ears

I have been working on a super-secret present for a coworker all this week. The present is nearly finished, but I have had no time for writing, which makes me restless. Still, FunkyPlaid and I managed to squeeze in a three-mile walk and a movie (“Up In the Air”, which we both enjoyed immensely). I also had another dress fitting. For, you know, a dress I am going to wear at some big fancy party in October or something. I don’t know, maybe my WEDDING which is in about FOUR MONTHS. Whaaaaaat? I am excited about the dress in a way that I cannot adequately describe. Often I forget that I work in a building of magic. The color copier is especially entrancing to patrons; brilliant smiles erupt out of sullen faces when a color copy appears. Black-and-white copiers are envious. The color copier is fussy and takes several minutes to do its arcane shuffle-sneeze of readiness. People wait before it as if they are waiting to give their confessions, eyes downcast, silent. Sometimes people leave behind their most prized flat possessions: driver’s license, photograph, passport, Muni pass. We collect them in a folder and do nothing with them, layers upon layers of lost.
