Day 90 of Project 365: Jumper Progress
Day 90 of Project 365: Jumper Progress, a photo by cygnoir on Flickr. This is the jumper I am knitting for FunkyPlaid, as pictured about 40% complete. I think. I’ve never done this before, so I could be more like 25% complete, or even 5% complete. But I’m going to make an overconfident statement about the progress of this project because I can. Knitting is a very good hobby to have. Not only can you make cool things with knitting, but it gives you something tangible to do while you are procrastinating other, more important things. My mom taught me how to crochet when I was very young, and I learned to knit soon after that. I have two specific memories about this. One, I remember crocheting a long chain of dark yarn while on a train through the Alps....

Day 89 of Project 365: Zenside, a photo by cygnoir on Flickr. Mondays are all about homework deadlines. Add to this my weird back pain — which is either due to an overenthusiastic run on Saturday or an overenthusiastic sleep yesterday — and there is not much going on to photograph today. I suppose I could have snapped the replacement microwave our property manager dropped off, but I got sidetracked by this cat instead. I think she is a bit cuter than a new...

Read MoreReview: A Dance with Dragons
A Dance with Dragons by George R.R. Martin My rating: 2 of 5 stars This is going to be difficult for me to write, as I looked so forward to this book for so long, and have recommended the series to everyone I know. Twice. *** SPOILER WARNING *** SPOILER WARNING *** “A Dance with Dragons” is a disappointing read. Not disappointing within the context of the series, although the writing certainly isn’t as strong or as cohesive as the first or second books. Not disappointing within the fantasy genre, as it is still some of the stronger fantasy writing I’ve read. It is disappointing because I am already scrambling to find a synopsis just so I can remember who everyone is and why they did what they did. Maybe it would have...
Read MoreDocile copiers.
I want to be an innovator and not a copier. I struggle with what that means every day. A tiny number of ideas can go a long way, as we’ve seen. And the Internet makes that more and more likely. What’s happening is that we might, in fact, be at a time in our history where we’re being domesticated by these great big societal things, such as Facebook and the Internet. We’re being domesticated by them, because fewer and fewer and fewer of us have to be innovators to get by. And so, in the cold calculus of evolution by natural selection, at no greater time in history than ever before, copiers are probably doing better than innovators. Because innovation is extraordinarily hard. My worry is that we could be moving in that direction, towards...
Read MoreWhither weather?
With the evil cousin of Hurricane Bawbag rattling at our shutters, here are some links of UK weather-related websites and apps. BBC Weather: An obvious choice for me because I like the design and typography. O, and it’s the BBC or something. Met Office UK Weather: The Met Office page isn’t as pretty but has lots and lots of maps. (Ditto Weather.com and Accuweather.) XCWeather: There is a lot of science behind this site. I just like the wind observation arrows. The UK Weather Information Site: Crunch your own data! Ant Veal’s GreatWeather: So very many links. 1293 as of this writing. Weather Underground: My personal favorite, and it has been for many years. I also like their weather badges for embedding in websites. Like this one: Click for...

Glad No Matter What: Transforming Loss and Change into Gift and Opportunity by SARK My rating: 3 of 5 stars This was my first exposure to SARK’s writing, aside from her posters. It was a gift from a former co-worker as I left my job at the San Francisco Public Library. At the time, I didn’t feel very gracious about the transition, and so it has taken me a while to finish reading this. “Glad No Matter What” is primarily a book about the type of loss and change that surrounds the death of a loved one, but I could apply some of it to the loss and change I am currently experiencing as I transition to my new home. SARK’s unbridled enthusiasm and good nature bursts from every page, and it is difficult not to be cheered by...
