This is the jumper I am knitting for FunkyPlaid, as pictured about 40% complete.
I’ve never done this before, so I could be more like 25% complete, or even 5% complete. But I’m going to make an overconfident statement about the progress of this project because I can.
Knitting is a very good hobby to have. Not only can you make cool things with knitting, but it gives you something tangible to do while you are procrastinating other, more important things.
My mom taught me how to crochet when I was very young, and I learned to knit soon after that. I have two specific memories about this. One, I remember crocheting a long chain of dark yarn while on a train through the Alps. I just kept going on and on in a chain, on and on.
The other memory is of a woman at the arts center in my hometown who taught me how to knit. I had just read Through the Looking Glass and I could not stop picturing her as the Sheep. The yarn I learned on was very red and soft, and the woman was very kind and patient. But she never bleated, not once. I know because I was waiting for it.
