Day 131 of Project 365: Incorrect

Standard

That’s the take-home lesson from this week’s scripting languages assignment: I am incorrect.

Have you ever learned something and felt very confident about your new knowledge, then attempted to do something with it and realised with a shock that you had no real idea what you knew in the first place?

Yep, today’s like that. With AJAX. And it ain’t pretty. Good thing I did learn one lesson: ask for help when you need it.

Believe it or not, your assignment only had two or three flaws in it.  I have seen far worse from people who fancied themselves far better.

The curse of the competent is that whenever we have a braino, we take it as evidence we are incompetent.  The truth is that it’s in the fact we can recognize we’ve had a braino which is the surest sign of competency.

Trust me — the incompetent go through their entire careers without ever wondering, “gee, should this understandable but embarrassing error cause me to doubt my estimation of my abilities?”  It never crosses their minds.  That’s what makes them so dangerous.

    Oh, yeah.  Plenty of times.

In fact, I continued doing so until I realized I don’t really know much about anything.  After lowering my self-expectations about how proficient I am at anything., I’ve been much better.
