Zen, like most cats, is a mercurial being. As she approaches her nineteenth birthday, she is often restless. Today she riffled through the recycling, spreading it out across the pantry floor. There was nothing delicious to be found, so she left it there.

Sometimes she rests. Other times she yowls as if she is about to expire that very moment, but she does rest. We have discovered places that are more pleasing to her than others. The aforementioned Reggie is one such place. This is another: a pile of pillows mushed into a makeshift seating area in our half-empty living-room. FunkyPlaid discovered this one by situating her in it and petting her until she fell asleep.

I do so love dogs and their straightforward natures, but loving cats reminds me to appreciate that which is beautiful and confusing and uncontrolled.

A lot happened in the world today. (A lot happens every day.) I don’t really have any words for it, so I’m sharing something completely unrelated, something that makes me happy, something that won’t be around forever so I’m scrutinizing it maybe a bit too much right now. Today. Especially today.

That’s all I’ve got.
